March 6: 34th Annual Trapper’s Carnival Celebrates Canadian Legacy Kawartha Haliburton Trappers Association expects largest turnout in history for 2010 event! On Saturday, March 6, join the Kawartha Haliburton Trappers Association as they host the 34th Annual Trappers Carnival at the Apsley Community Centre. Proudly sponsored by Apsley Home Building Centre and Tuckers Marine, the 2010 event promises to be the biggest yet. Free for all ages, visitors can share the experience of Canada’s proud fur harvesting legacy with over 300 other guests and dozens of vendors. Perfect for everyone from the avid fur harvester to the outdoor enthusiast, the carnival features all-day fur handling demonstrations, door prizes, games such as “Guess the Weight of the Beaver”, and numerous skills competitions including trap-setting, pelt preparation, a tomahawk throw, nail-driving and more. First held in 1976, the event was introduced by the not-for-profit Kawartha Haliburton Trappers Association as a fun and interactive way to promote education and increase awareness about the industry. “People are usually quite surprised at the history behind fur harvesting and how important it is to the Canadian economy,” says Kim Dunford, co-founder of the Kawartha Haliburton Trappers Association. “Our goal for the event is to not only promote responsible fur management among trappers, but to also provide public education for those who are unfamiliar with the industry.” In addition to competitions and games throughout the day, guests can access services such as on-site knife sharpening, fur remodeling and repair, new and custom fur creations, trapper information and numerous vendors offering a variety of trapping and hunting-related equipment and supplies. Gord Stickles of Valley Cedarleaf Oil will also be on-hand to purchase beaver castors. March 21: 4th Line Theatre is proud to announce the 7th annual Breaking Ground featuring a public reading of excerpts from Shirley Barrie’s Queen Marie based on the life of Marie Dressler, a self described “ugly duckling” from Cobourg Ontario who became one of the greatest and best loved stars of Broadway and Hollywood, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1931. Peterborough Museum and Archives will host this event on Sunday, March 21st at 2 p.m. Breaking Ground is part of 4th Line Theatre’s New Play Development program, designed to support, nurture and encourage the creation of environmentally-staged historical plays. This ongoing process of dramaturgical support, workshops and public readings is vital to 4th Line Theatre’s commitment to provide audiences with the highest quality Canadian drama. “Public readings are an important part of the creation of plays,” says Robert Winslow, Artistic Director of 4th Line Theatre. “This forum gives the writer the opportunity to figure out what works. The audience’s feedback during the discussion afterward may be the most valuable lesson learned.” Joining Winslow and Barrie in the reading of Queen Marie are 4th Line Theatre Artistic Producer Kim Blackwell as director and Maya Ardal as Marie Dressler. The reading begins at 2 p.m. Admission is free, though seating is limited. Complimentary tickets are available from the Museum’s Reception.
